The Founder
Carl Henrickson started this forge with a hammer, a mortgage, and a stubborn rule: nothing leaves Barberton that he wouldn’t stake his name on.
He was 34, a third-generation toolmaker out of Pittsburgh, working out of a rented bay on Newell Street with seven hires and a single forging press his father had helped him buy. The recession of ’82 had just gutted the steel belt, and every other toolmaker in the county was either closing up or quietly shipping jobs to Taiwan. Carl took the opposite bet. He bought the bay, hired the laid-off forgers, and wrote a one-line policy on the wall above his desk that is still framed there: If it doesn’t say Barberton on the shank, we don’t sell it.
Forty-two years and four recessions later, the wall still says it. Carl stepped aside as CEO in 2011, when the employee stock ownership plan went live and 27% of the company moved to the people who actually run the presses. He stayed on as chairman emeritus, keeps a bay-station on the floor, and still personally signs the rejection slips on any tool that doesn’t pass his hand-check before it ships.

The Rule

Every wrench, pair of pliers, hammer, screwdriver, and chisel we ship is forged, machined, heat-treated, ground, and assembled inside our 220,000-square-foot plant on Newell Street. No component is sourced offshore. No SKU is rebranded from an import. No “Assembled in America” asterisk. The rule is older than most of the people on the floor, and it has not been bent once since Carl wrote it on the wall.
We melt our own 5160-grade chromoly steel in the on-site furnace — a domestically melted alloy that comes back 38% harder than the imported chrome-vanadium the big-box brands quietly ship in under their own labels. Every tool gets a forge-stamp on the shank and a serialized birth certificate in the box, traced back to the melt lot, the press operator, and the heat-treat cycle. If you want to know who made your wrench, the answer is a barcode scan and a name.
That is the difference between a hand tool and a hand tool built to be handed down. Average product lifetime under warranty use, across 84,000 claims filed since 1990: twenty-seven years. We will replace any of them, for the original owner, against defects in materials and workmanship, for as long as you own the tool. No lifetime-limit fine print. No pro-rated nonsense. No “original proof of purchase required.” Just a hammer and a handshake that still means something.

Who Makes the Tools
Owned by the people on the floor. Hired from the people who served. Trained in the trade they’ll spend a career in.
Three mechanisms, not a slogan. The 27% ESOP is the largest partial employee ownership plan in the U.S. hand-tool industry. The veteran hiring rate runs through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Hire Vets program. And the apprenticeship fund is paid out of company profits, not grant money.
